Thomas Birkmeir
Thomas Birkmeir (* 1964 in Munich ) is a German director , author , actor and general manager .
Artistic career
After graduating from high school in 1983, Birkmeir studied pedagogy , psychology and philosophy from 1983 to 1988 . In the meantime he passed the parity examination for drama in Munich . After completing his studies, he completed the directing course at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna . At the same time he was assistant director at the Burgtheater while Claus Peymann was in charge .
From 1992 until 1994 he worked as in-house director and actor at the Schauspielhaus Wien under Hans Gratzer . In 1994 he worked as a director and author at the Theater der Jugend Wien. From 1998 to 2001 he was senior director at the Schlossparktheater Berlin (director Heribert Sasse ). This was followed by his appointment as artistic director at the Theater der Jugend Wien . Since the 2002/03 season he has worked there as artistic director and director.
Birkmeir has staged at theaters in Germany and Austria, including the Staatstheater Dresden and the Lower Saxony State Theater in Hanover , where he staged the world premiere of the stage version of Cornelia Funke's Ink Blood in 2006 . He also worked as a director at the Volkstheater Wien (directing with Harold and Maude , with Elfriede Irrall as Maude, awarded the Dorothea Neff Prize for the “best directorial performance in the 2010/2011 season”), at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna ( 2013; Direction at wedding in Italian - Filumena Marturano by Eduardo De Filippo ), also at the Residenztheater Munich (2012; directed by Pünktchen and Anton ), at the Thalia Theater Hamburg , at the Vienna State Opera and as artistic director at own houses.
Birkmeir is also known as an author; his plays and adaptations have so far been performed in over 70 German-speaking theaters. He taught drama at the Vienna Conservatory, at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and at the Institute for Theater, Film and Media Studies Vienna.
In November 2013 Thomas Birkmeir was awarded a special prize for "10 years of innovative, contemporary children's and youth theater" at the Nestroy Prize.
Birkmeir has been a member of the Presidium of the Wiener Bühnen Verein since 2012. Since 2014 he has been the University Council of MUK Vienna.
