Sergej Nikolajewitsch von Freymann (born April 25, 1882 in Vladivostok , † 1946 in Tashkent ) was a Russian-Uzbek chess master . He came from the Baltic noble family von Freymann . His father was the Russian major general Nikolai von Freymann .

Chess master

Sergej was considered one of the strongest chess masters at the time of the Russian Revolution , he was a four-time Uzbek champion and in 1929 took second place in the Soviet chess championship. Even before the First World War , he took part in some chess championships in Saint Petersburg and finished in the top 10. So he was fifth in 1908 in the Russian championship in Łódź . At the Cologne Chess Congress in 1911 he came in the main tournament A on a shared 2nd to 5th place. First place went to Moishe Lowtzky, whereby Freymann was seen as the “moral winner”. For example, he played against the well-known masters Carl Wilhelm Rosenkrantz and Eugène Znosko-Borovsky , the later world champion Alexander Alekhine and the world-class player Akiba Rubinstein and other international chess masters. Until the end of his life he took part in chess tournaments and championships in the Soviet Union . In 1929 he won the championship of the Turkmen SSR , in 1937 he was tied for first in the Kyrgyz championship (both out of competition). In his last competition he finished 4th in the 10th Uzbek championship in 1945/46. He died in Tashkent in 1946.
