Sergio Kerusch (born January 6, 1989 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is a German - American basketball player . Born in the United States, he has both citizenships thanks to his German father and, after studying in his native country, plays as a professional in Europe. Since June 2016 he has been part of the Central German BC squad .

Career

After high school in his hometown, Kerusch first had to go to a community college to study. From 2007 he studied for a year at Itawamba Community College in Mississippi . With the university team of Indians , he won the regional championships in Division I of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) and moved into the national finals of the 16 best teams. He then moved to Western Kentucky University , where he played for the Hilltoppers college team in the Sun Belt Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In his first season with the Hilltoppers they won the regular season of the conference and defended their title in the championship final tournament. At the national NCAA finals one surprised in the first round the higher ranked Fighting Illinois of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign , but lost in the second round with two points difference against the Bulldogs of Gonzaga University . In the following two seasons, the Hilltoppers could not qualify for any finals.

In 2011 Kerusch started a professional career in the Greek A1 Ethniki with Aris from Thessaloniki . For his European career, Kerusch used his German citizenship in order to fall under the not so restrictive foreigner restrictions for EU citizens. While Aris was eliminated as seventh in the main round in the first play-off round against defending champion Panathinaikos Athens , Kerusch was able to draw attention to himself with his enormous athleticism. He was then signed for the following season 2012/13 by the German first division club Artland Dragons. However, Kerusch showed problems adapting to the European style of play and could not earn a permanent place in the rotation of the players. Instead, his game shares fell towards the end of the season. In the first play-off round for the championship, the Dragons lost to previous runner-up ratiopharm Ulm . For the 2013/2014 season, Kerusch still had a contract with the Artland Dragons, but he no longer played a role in the coach's plans. It was therefore planned that he would be available as a training player and be able to keep fit in Quakenbrück. But he was injured before the start of the season and was out for several months. He didn't play a single competitive game for the Dragons in 2013/2014.

In February 2015 he was signed by another German first division club, Eisbären Bremerhaven , and played twelve Bundesliga games for the team by the end of the 14/15 season . After being suspended in the 2015/16 season, Kerusch signed a contract with Mitteldeutsche BC in June 2016 , who had previously been relegated from the Bundesliga to the 2nd Bundesliga ProA . He became ProA Champion 2017 with the MBC and was on his way to winning the title with an average of 16.5 points, the second best thrower of the Weißenfels team.
