Serhij Vitaliyovich Kurchenko (born September 21, 1985 in Kharkiv , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian entrepreneur and sports official. Since December 2012 he has been president of the Metalist Kharkiv football club .

Kurchenko was born in Kharkiv and studied first at the Technical University , later also at the Law Academy in his hometown.

Kurchenko began his business career at Ekspogas . In 2008 the company entered the liquefied gas trade on a large scale . Today the VETEK group, of which he is the founder and chairman of the supervisory board, controls around 80 percent of the Ukrainian market for liquid gas.

In 2012, VETEK acquired the Metalist Kharkiv football club from then President Oleksandr Yaroslavskyi for an unknown price. The until then largely unknown Kurchenko became president of the association.

The Ukrainian edition of Forbes magazine published an article critical of Kurchenko in December 2012. In 2013 VETEK acquired the Ukrainian Media Holding publishing group , to which Forbes also belongs. While he himself gave a purchase price of 170 million US dollars, various Ukrainian media cited a purchase price of 400 million dollars. After the takeover of the publishing group, several editors from Forbes were dismissed, complaining about attempts by the new owner to censor.

In the list of the 100 richest Ukrainians published every year by the magazine Korrespondent , Kurchenko ranked 7th in 2013 with a fortune of 2.4 billion US dollars.

Kurchenko was said to have good relations with the family of the then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych , in particular he was a friend of Oleksandr Yanukovych . Kurchenko denied these connections and emphasized that he had completed his career on his own.

On March 6, 2014, the Council of the European Union in Brussels imposed restrictive measures against Serhiy Kurchenko with Regulation 208/2014. This is justified with the criminal prosecution of Kurchenko for the investigation of crimes related to the embezzlement of Ukrainian public funds and the illegal transfer of these funds abroad. According to media reports, Kurchenko is said to have fled to Moscow after Yanukovych was overthrown .
