Serhiy Oleksijowytsch Taruta ( Ukrainian Сергій Олексійович Тарута , Russian Сергей Алексеевич Тарута Sergei Taruta Alekseevich * 23. July 1955 in the village Wynohradne , Novoazovsk Raion in the Donetsk Oblast ) is a Ukrainian entrepreneurs, politicians, patrons and sports official.

As a non-attached MP he represents the constituency of Mariupol in the Verkhovna Rada . Taruta was long considered one of the richest men in Ukraine and was counted among the oligarchs until he lost most of his wealth in the course of the war in eastern Ukraine . Taruta was Governor of Donetsk Oblast between March 2014 and October 2014 .

Life

Studies and advancement as an entrepreneur

Taruta initially studied at the Institute of Metallurgy and, in the 1990s, studied economics in Donetsk. In 1995 he founded the foreign trade company Asowimpex, which still exists today . The heart of his company, which produces a total of around ten million tons of steel per year, is now the Donbass Industrial Union (IUD), and he is the chairman of the company's supervisory board. In 2007 Taruta acquired the Gdansk shipyard , the former Lenin shipyard, as well as two steelworks in Poland and Hungary.

Political career

Office as governor of Donetsk Oblast

After the coup in Ukraine in 2014 , Taruta was appointed governor of Donetsk Oblast on March 2nd by Ukrainian interim president Oleksandr Turchynov . On October 10, 2014, he was deposed by President Poroshenko .

Member of the Verkhovna Rada and running for the presidency

In the Ukrainian parliamentary elections, Taruta won a direct mandate for the Verkhovna Rada in Mariupol (constituency 58) in Donetsk Oblast. In parliament he is chairman of the subcommittee on protection of historical and cultural heritage of the committee for culture and spirituality, as well as chairman of the group for inter-parliamentary relations with the Federal Republic of Germany .

Taruta is one of the founders of the Ukrainian party Osnova, which was founded on February 10, 2017. On September 22, 2018, Taruta was chosen as their top candidate for the Ukrainian presidential elections in March 2019. During the election campaign, the party focused on an economic turnaround in Ukraine and an end to the war in eastern Ukraine. Two weeks before the presidential election, Taruta called on his supporters to support the more promising candidate Yulia Tymoshenko , who, however, missed the runoff election.

Private

Taruta is the president of the Metalurh Donetsk football club , he is married and has two children.
