Sericolea micans is a tree in the Elaeocarpaceae family from New Guinea . It thrives in rather higher altitudes between 850 and 2800 meters.
description
Sericolea micans grows as a tree to about 25 meters high. The trunk diameter reaches up to 50 centimeters. The somewhat rough, pebbled bark is brown-gray.
The simple, short-stalked and slightly leathery to papery, relatively thin leaves are opposite. They are egg-shaped, lanceolate to lanceolate, long, pointed to tail and about 4–8 inches long, 0.8–1.5 inches wide, as well as finely toothed at the edge. The leaf margin is slightly curled at the base. The somewhat silky hairy petiole is 3–4 millimeters long. The leaves are dense underneath, silky and yellowish to whitish hairy to almost bare and bare on the upper side except on the central vein. The nerve is pinnate with a thick, raised central vein on the underside. There are durable, small and elongated stipules .
Usually axillary, very small grapes or rarely panicles are formed. The stalked, very small and white, mostly five-fold flowers are hermaphroditic with a double flower envelope . The 0.7–1.4 centimeter long peduncle is hairy and silky. There are small, mostly sloping bracts with minimal teeth on the side. The inside keeled, egg-shaped, 2-3 millimeter long sepals are silky hairy on the outside and the equally long, inverted-wedge-shaped petals are trimmed and minimally three-lobed or notched. There are 11–15 free, very small stamens . The two-chamber, bare ovary is upper constant with a short, conical stylus and it is a tieflappiger Diskus present.
Red to black berries , about 4 millimeters in size , are produced. The one or two seeds are up to 3 millimeters in size.
Taxonomy
It was first described in 1916 by Rudolf Schlechter in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. 54: 98. Synonyms are Sericolea elegans Schltr. , Sericolea werneri (Lauterb.) Schltr. and Hormopetalum werneri Lauterb.
There are two varieties:
- Sericolea micans var. Micans
- Sericolea micans var. Glabra (Schltr.) Balgooy (Syn .: Sericolea floribunda A.C.Sm. and Sericolea glabra Schltr. ); in lower areas with almost bare leaves underneath and larger inflorescences with more flowers.
