The serine protein kinase ATM is an enzyme in the nucleus of animal and fungal cells. It acts as a sensor for DNA damage, especially double-strand breaks . In the event of damage from UV radiation , ATM can be activated indirectly via ATR ( Ataxia telangiectasia and Rad3-related protein ).
ATM initiates signal cascades for the production of DNA repair proteins . If severely damaged, it can stop the cell cycle and cause cell death . In humans, ATM is expressed in many tissue types and has additional functions in allele exclusion of B-cell maturation and possibly in vesicle transport . Mutations in the ATM - gene responsible for ataxia telangiectasia and contribute to the risk of several types of leukemia , breast cancer and lung cancer .
The term ATM is the abbreviation of Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated .
One inhibitor of ATM kinase is caffeine .
