Serrasalmus compressus is a species of saw tetra from tropical South America . The additional species compressus refers to the laterally flattened body.

description

The fish are about 19 to 25 centimeters long. The body is high back and flattened at the sides, the head narrow with a long, pointed muzzle . As with Serrasalmus geryi and Serrasalmus altuvei , the ectopterygoid is dentate. There are round, black spots on the sides of the body. The eyes are reddish orange. Serrasalmus compressus is easily confused with Serrasalmus geryi or Serrasalmus altuvei .

According to the first description , the body of the living fish is colored gray metallic. The front part of the anal fin (anal) is pale red, the lower part of the head is uncolored. On the flanks there are round, sometimes somewhat oval, black spots that are more numerous towards the top of the body. The flanks of large specimens are bright with conspicuous black spots, in specimens from the Rio Guaporé (Río Iténez) the spots on the flanks are somewhat larger and less numerous. Some individuals have an indistinct shoulder mark. At the outer edge of the anal fin and the dorsal fin (dorsal) there are black stripes, and at the terminal end of the caudal fin (caudal) there is a very high-contrast, black band. The remaining fins are transparent ( hyaline ).

According to the first description, the anal fin is supported from 30 to 34 (31), the dorsal fin from 14 to 17 (15) and the pectoral fins (pectorals) from 13 to 15 (13) divided soft rays. The number of scales along the lateral line is 75 to 86 (76), around the tail stalk there are 32 to 37 (33) scales. The total number of abdominal teeth ( serrae ) is 28 to 36 (30).

distribution

Serrasalmus compressus lives in Brazil , Bolivia and Peru in the central Amazon and in the catchment area of the Rio Madeira . It is considered rare and can only be collected with great effort.

Way of life

Very little is known about the way of life of S. compressus . Scientific studies are mostly limited to the genetic differences between S. compressus and other piranha species.
