Serrasalmus nalseni is a species of saw tetra from tropical South America . The original type material is considered lost, in 2009 the species was re-described and a neotype determined.

features

Serrasalmus nalseni is a high-backed, somewhat robust saw tetra with a very short snout and relatively large eyes, which can reach a maximum length of 12.6 cm SL . The body shape is diamond-shaped and resembles other strongly built tetras such as Serrasalmus manueli , Serrasalmus medinai and Serrasalmus neveriensis . The body color is metallic, silvery greenish with a reddish tint towards the abdominal area and over the pectoral and pelvic fins and anal fin . There are numerous dark spots on the body, especially on the sides of the back. The dorsal fin (dorsal) is almost black. There is a dark band at the base of the anal fin. The adipose fin is black except for the rear edge. Almost the entire caudal fin is covered by a very broad, dark band towards the caudal peduncle. The iris is silvery yellow, a vertical dark band runs through the eye.

Serrasalmus nalseni has 37 to 38 vertebrae. The scales are small and numerous, there are 80 to 82 pierced scales along the sideline . The number Abdominalzähne ( Serres ) before the beginning of the ventral fins (prepelvic Serres) 24 (postpelvic Serres) to 25, the number after the start of 8 to 10. precloacal and prädorsale spines are present. The 23 to 24 gill spines are short and broad at the base. The premaxillaries and dentals have strong, sharp teeth. The teeth are three-pointed, the middle point is the best developed. As with other species, the teeth sit in a row. The ectopterygoid has a few (3 to 4, rarely 5) blunt teeth.

distribution

The description is based on two specimens caught in the Venezuelan river Río Uracoa (state of Monagas ). Up to now the species is only known from the Morichales , a landscape with Moriche palm trees in Venezuela. There it occurs in the Río Morichal Largo , Río Tabasca and Río Uracoa, which flow into the Orinoco Delta in the states of Anzoategui and Monagas .
