Seth G. Jones

Seth G. Jones (born October 2, 1972 ) is an American political scientist in a leading position at the Rand Corporation and honorary professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey . His main topics are counterinsurgency and terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan , on which he has published several books and articles. Jones served in various military roles for the US Special Operations Command .

Career

Jones received a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Political Science. He is an honorary professor at Georgetown University and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey . His specialty, for which he was particularly interested in the 9-11, are counter-terrorism and insurgency with a focus on Afghanistan, Pakistan and al-Qaeda .

In 2003 he published the book America's Role in Nation-Building with the American diplomat James Dobbins, who led the negotiations on the Petersberg Agreement in December 2001 . There they examine the success of American state building efforts since World War II on the basis of seven cases, including Germany. In 2010, he received the silver medal of the Arthur Ross Book Award given by the Council on Foreign Relations for his book In the Graveyard of Empires , which deals with the history of Afghanistan from the fall of Zahir Shah to the present day . This award honors works that have made a contribution to the understanding of foreign policy and international relations. His articles have appeared in the New York Times , Foreign Affairs , Foreign Policy, and Washington Post , among others .

Until May 2010 he served in Afghanistan as a planning officer and advisor to the commanding general of the United States Special Operations Forces. Since then he has been the representative of the Commander of the US Special Operations Command to the United States Secretary of Defense .
