Shadowkeep (computer game)

Shadowkeep is a computer game by the US company Telarium (formerly: Trillium) from 1984. As a genre mix ( genre hybrid ) it contains elements of the two computer game genres of point-and-click adventures and role-playing games . As the first novel adaptation of a computer game, Shadowkeep was the basis for the novel of the same name by the writer Alan Dean Foster .

Shadowkeep takes place in a fantasy world. The player has to free the wizard Nacomedon , who is being held captive by a demon in a tower ("shadowkeep"). For example, he has to deal with trolls and other fantasy characters.

Gameplay

Shadowkeep is an interactive point-and-click adventure and role-playing game . The player can embody up to nine game characters. The game is controlled via joystick or mouse.

Development and production details

The game has two-dimensional graphics and was implemented for the Apple II . Implementations for C 64 and DOS were announced, but there is no evidence that they actually appeared.

The company Ultrasoft from Issaquah responsible for the development had previously published the adventures The Mask of the Sun and The Serpent's Star in 1982 .

The Adventure was the first computer game on which a book based: The novel Shadowkeep (Warner Books, 1984; German translation: Shadow Keep - The dark land , Heyne, 1987) was based on the Telarium game by writer Alan Dean Foster wrote . In retrospect, the game was recognized as groundbreaking in a GameSpy interview with Foster (“a groundbreaking product at the time.”). Shadowkeep was a pioneer for later, more complex works such as the role-playing game series Eye of the Beholder .
