The Shahid Abbaspur Dam (or "Karun-1") is a large dam in Iran . It is located 50 km northeast of Masjed Soleyman am Karun in the province of Khuzestan .
The barrier structure is a double-curved arch dam . Two hydropower plants are connected to the dam , which together with eight turbines of 250 MW each deliver a total of 2000 MW of electrical power. After the dam was completed in 1976, there were initially only four machine sets. The second power plant was built in 1995 as a deep underground cavern, 150 m below the lake water level. The eighth turbine only went into operation in 2006.
The dam is also used for flood protection . The dams Karun-2 ( Masjid-e-Soleiman dam ), Karun-3 , Karun-4 , and the Gotvand dam are located on the same river.
