Shahpura is a city of around 40,000 people in the Bhilwara district in the southeast of the Indian state of Rajasthan .

Location and climate

Shahpura is located a good 71 km (driving distance) northeast of the district capital Bhilwara at an altitude of approx. 374  m ; to Jaipur it is a good 180 km in a north-easterly direction. The climate is mostly dry and warm; Most of the annual precipitation (approx. 605 mm / year) falls in the monsoon months , ie from the end of June to mid-September.

Almost 80% of the population are Hindus , approx. 18% are Muslims ; just under 2% are Jains , Sikhs and Christians . The male population is only slightly higher than the female.

economy

Shahpura is the craft, mercantile and service center of a large number of villages in the area.

history

The early history of Shahpura is not known. Suraj Mal, a loyal servant of the Mughal ruler Shah Jahan , made the place the capital of the princely state of the same name in 1629 , which only ceased to exist in 1956.

Attractions

  • The old Prince's Palace (Shahpura Mahal) from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century is in a bad structural condition.
  • The most important attraction is the Ramdwara Temple , located approx. 1 km southwest of the city center . Large parts of the structure are provided with Bengali roofs .
  • The tomb of the Sufi saint Hazrat Sujat Ali is well visited.
