The structure has a total length of 25.5 km, 16.63 km of which is accounted for by the bridge and 8.9 km by the tunnel. The tunnel begins south of the Yangtze River in Pudong and ends on Changxing Island . The bridge section of the structure consists of 6.66 km of simple road and 9.97 km of a bridge. The bridge connects Changxing Island with Chongming Island.

The bridge is part of the Hushan Expressway between Shanghai and Xi'an and is therefore also part of the Chinese motorway network . Together with the Chongqi Daqiao or Chonghai Daqiao bridges , the Yangtze can be crossed completely by car.
