Shattered Grounds is the second studio album by the Swedish synthpop band Elegant Machinery . It was published in 1993.

The songs were recorded during the summer in the MRC studio in Malmö , the responsible producer was Fredrik Bergengren . Only the song Under Contention was produced elsewhere and remixed by Krister Pettersen . The later digital mastering was done by the digital factories in Gothenburg . The songs were all written jointly by Leslie Bayne and Richard Johansson, except for the song Flag of Truce , which was written by Johansson alone, and Cold As Ice by Johan Malmgren.

The cover shows a black and white photograph of a paint bustier -clad woman.

The music is heavily influenced by the British synthpop of the eighties and includes a spectrum from ballad-like songs to fast-paced, dance-oriented pieces. The production of the album is smoother than the band's debut. For Under Contention , the band used an oriental theme. The last three songs belong together thematically and musically and merge into one another.

The lyrics on the album are mainly about relationships between people, but are also directed against war, as in Flag of Truce , or deal with the rapid development of the modern world ( hard to handle ).

Reviews

“It's almost hard to describe how good this album is. If you are a fan of analog synth-pop , you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this CD. Imagine Erasure with a more baritone- leaning voice and songs as good or better than Erasure in its heyday, then you have a good idea of what to expect here. Simply a wonderful album! "
