Richmond Palace was a royal residence on the Thames 15 km southwest of the Palace of Westminster . In the time before the Tudor family , the previous building was known as the Sheen Palace .

history

In 1299 Edward I moved his court to Sheen (the old name of Richmond upon Thames ), which became the first royal residence. Richard II was the first English king to make Sheen his main residence in 1383.

On December 23, 1497 a fire destroyed the buildings. King Henry VII had a new castle built and named it after the title of his father, the Earl of Richmond .

After the execution of Charles I in 1649, the castle was sold for £ 13,000  and demolished from 1651 onwards.
