Sher 25 is a star located almost 25,000 light years from Earth in the galactic emission nebula NGC 3603 . With an apparent magnitude of 12.23 mag, it can be observed in the southern constellation Kiel of the ship under ideal conditions with a telescope with an opening of at least 200 mm.
The mass of the blue supergiant is about 40 to 52 solar masses , at the beginning of its main sequence phase it was 60 solar masses. At this point in time, the star was a supergiant of spectral class B3 I. It is surrounded by a circumstellar nebula consisting of an equatorial ring that was ejected 6560 years ago and a bipolar discharge from 6700 years ago . Sher 25 was first described and named by David Sher in an article published in 1965 in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society about measuring the distance to five open star clusters .
Sher 25 is considered a candidate for a Type II supernova .
