Sherlock Holmes: The Mummy's Secret is a video game from the point-and-click adventure genre released in 2002 . The game is the first part of the Sherlock Holmes series of games developed by Frogwares , which is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes . The game was published by Frogster for Microsoft Windows . An adapted version of the game was released in April 2009 for the Nintendo DS .

In 2004, Sherlock Holmes: The Secret of the Silver Earring appeared, a follow-up to The Secret of the Mummy .

action

After the British archaeologist Lord Montcalfe died under mysterious circumstances, his daughter Elisabeth turned to private detective Sherlock Holmes for help. Since his friend and chronicler Dr. Watson is on a vacation trip, Holmes alone decides to investigate the lord's mansion, which has been vacant since his death. There he has to use all his skills to solve the mystery that surrounds this case.

Gameplay

The game is played in the first person perspective, acting in the role of Sherlock Holmes and moving in rendered backgrounds, which gives the impression of a three-dimensional environment. Possible changes of scene are represented by a special cursor in hand form and carried out with a click. Various objects can also be collected, used and combined with one another by clicking. Two icons are used to call up the inventory and a notepad that contains all documents received in the course of the story as well as Sherlock Holmes' notes on the progress of the story. It is also possible to load and save scores using the notepad.

The main challenge of the game is to find and combine different objects and solve classic logic puzzles.

background

The Mummy's Secret was also released for Nintendo DS on April 29, 2009.

The game differs significantly from the subsequent titles in the series. It is particularly noticeable that it involves almost no interaction with other people. It is also not really about doing detective work, but about solving classic puzzles.

reception

The Adventure-Treff website praised the coherent background story and the nicely rendered cutscenes, but complained about the blurry graphics, the almost complete lack of music and animations and puzzles that were detached from the story. It was concluded that the game was "only recommended to all those who describe themselves as avid Sherlock Holmes lovers." The overall rating was 59%.

The game received a rating of 23% in PC Games magazine . It was criticized that the story “has just as little charm as the wooden dialogues”, and it comes to the conclusion that the game is “really only suitable for hobby puzzlers who have already plundered the stock of puzzle books in their magazine store” .
