Shinyanga is one of the three districts of the Shinyanga region in Tanzania with the administrative center in the city of Shinyanga . The district is bordered by the Mwanza region to the north, the Kihapu district to the northeast and east, the Tabora region to the south and the Kahama district to the west .

geography

The district has a size of 4760 square kilometers and 495,808 inhabitants (as of 2012). The country lies on a high plateau about 1000 meters above sea level. In the south it is mountainous and rises up to 1500 meters. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The months June to September are very dry, the rainy season lasts from mid-October to the end of May, with an annual average of 450 to 990 millimeters of precipitation. The coolest time is in July, the warmest is in October, the annual average temperature is 24 degrees Celsius.

history

The name Shinyanga comes from a large tree that the locals call "Inyanga". The district was established in 1984.

Most of the inhabitants belong to the Sukuma ethnic group . The population increased from 410,916 in 2002 to 495,808 in 2012. During the same period, the literacy rate of those over fifteen rose from 75 to 84 percent in cities and from 57 to 63 percent in rural areas, with the majority of the population speaking Swahili.

  • Education: There were 188 elementary schools and fifty secondary schools throughout the district (as of 2019).
  • Health: 4 health centers and 36 pharmacies are available in the District Council for the medical care of the population. The Town Council has two hospitals, a health center and 23 pharmacies (as of 2019).
  • Water: In 2012, 80 percent of households in the Town Council and 40 percent in the District Council had access to safe and clean water.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Agriculture is by far the most important branch of the economy. In the District Council, around forty percent of the total area is used for arable farming and fifty percent for livestock.
  • Trade: In addition to agriculture, trade also plays an important role in the Town Council.
  • Railway: The northern branch of the Tanganyika Railway , which branches off the main line in Tabora, runs through Shinyanga to Mwanza .
  • Road: The main road connection is the T8 national road. It leads from Tabora via Nzega in the south through the district and the capital Shinyanga to Mwanza in the north.
