Facilities and services

  • Education: There are a total of 94 primary schools and 15 secondary schools in the Msalala District Council. 91 of the primary schools are state schools. The education system suffers from a lack of classrooms and teachers, so there are 49 students for one teacher in Ushetu. Between 2002 and 2012, the number of illiterate people over the age of fifteen fell from 32 to 21 percent in urban areas and from 48 to 39 percent in rural areas. The proportion of the English-speaking population in particular was higher in the city.
  • Water: At the beginning of the 21st century, a water pipeline was built from Lake Victoria to Kahama to provide drinking water. The water is pumped through pipes with a diameter of 700 to 1200 millimeters into a main storage facility at Ihelele. From there the water flows into an eighteen million liter reservoir near the city of Kahama. The supply of safe and clean drinking water in rural Ushetu Council was below 50 percent in 2013.
