Shireen Ritchie, Baroness Ritchie of Brompton

Shireen Olive Ritchie, Baroness Ritchie of Brompton (born June 22, 1945 as Shireen Olive Folkard , † April 24, 2012 ) was a British politician ( Conservative Party ) and life peeress . As a politician, she worked to empower women in the Conservative Party.

Youth and job

She was born on June 22, 1945, the daughter of Commander Lionel Folkard. The father was an Arabist in colonial service. So she spent part of her childhood in Yemen . At the age of seven she went to boarding school in England . A few years later, when she was just ten years old, her parents also returned. Their marriage soon fell apart, which weighed on Ritchie. She later worked as a model and worked for Mary Quant and Zandra Rhodes , among others .

Her first marriage was to John Williams and had a son with him. After their divorce, she met John Ritchie. The two married in 1982 and she quit her job and took care of their stepchildren Tabitha and Guy Ritchie .

Political career

From 1998 to 2010 she was a member of the Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council . This was her first political office. She represented the Brompton district. In 2008, she said during the Interior Committee hearings on human trafficking . She was involved in the Conservative Party's efforts to draw attention to the issue of diversity within the party, including the women2win efforts 2005 and Priority List (A-List) candidates for which she received intra-party criticism.

She was Chair of the Party's Candidates Committee from 2006 to 2010 and became the champion of the Conservative Woman's Organization . In 2010 she was Chair of the Family and Children's Services of the Local Government Association (LGA). During this period, the department underwent reforms to reduce office work in order to ease pressure on social workers and improve the quality of childcare. Ritchie has served on the Family Justice Review Panel , the Kensington & Chelsea Partnership Steering Group , the Health and Well-Being Partnership Board (ex officio), the Joint Health Commissioning Board , the Supporting People Commissioning Body , the Borough Voluntary Organizations Advisory Group, and the Stable Way Advisory Group . She was also chairman ( chairman ) of the Appeals Panel .

Ritchie was on several other boards. She has served on the Local Government Association General Assembly , the London Councils (Children and Young People Forum) , the London Councils Grants Committee (as Deputy Chair), the William Petyt Charity and the London Youth Crime Prevention Board .

She became the first woman chair of the Kensington and Chelsea Conservative Association in 2000 and remained in office until her resignation in 2004. Before that, she was Deputy Chairman and supported Michael Portillo's candidacy in a 1999 by-election.

At the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council , she was responsible for social services from 2003 to 2005 and from 2005 for family and children. From 2008 to 2009 Ritchie was Deputy Mayor ( Deputy Mayor ). She was also the non-executive director of the Kensington and Chelsea Primary Care Trust .

Membership in the House of Lords

Ritchie became a Life Peeress on June 25, 2010 as Baroness Ritchie of Brampton, of Brampton, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea . Their official introduction to the House of Lords took place on June 29, 2010 with the assistance of Joan Hanham, Baroness Hanham and Patricia Morris, Baroness Morris of Bolton .

Ritchie was present relatively regularly on meeting days.

Other offices

She was Chair ( Chair ) of the Children and Young People Board of the Local Government Association and a member of the Supervisory Board ( Board ) of CAFCASS , a counseling service at the family court.

Ritchie was Vice President of the UK Youth charity . She was also President of the National Children's Bureau .
