Shlomo P. Neuman

Shlomo Peter Neuman (born October 26, 1938 in Žilina , Slovakia ; as Peter Neumann ) has been one of the world's leading groundwater hydrologists since the 1970s because of his specialist contributions .

He is a full professor in the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources at the University of Arizona at Tucson, specializing in groundwater hydrology and soil transport. He has published key publications on the design and evaluation of pump tests, on finite element modeling of flow and mass transport in the subsurface, and on the determination of parameters in heterogeneous subsoil.

With his Jewish family he managed to escape to Hungary in 1942. The father was betrayed and arrested there in 1944, and he and his mother were deported to Theresienstadt . He survived the concentration camp and was liberated in May 1945.

His mother remarried in 1947 and the family adopted a Hungarian surname. In 1949 the family emigrated to Israel . There he took his Hebrew first name Shlomo ( peace ) and went to a kibbutz .

At the age of 22, he obtained a distance learning degree and was able to obtain a bachelor's degree in geology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem during his military service .

He then went to the United States and received his master's degree from Berkeley University . In 1968 he published his doctoral thesis there.

In 1970 he returned to Israel and worked at the Agricultural Research Center in Bet Dagan until 1974 . An invitation brought him back to Berkley University in 1974.

Since 1975 he has taught at the University of Arizona in Tucson .
