Lifson was in the kibbutz for ten years from 1932 to 1945 before studying physics, mathematics and chemistry at the Hebrew University from 1943 . In 1948/49 he fought in the Palestinian War in the Israel Defense Forces and continued his scientific career in 1949 after receiving his master’s degree. He went to the polymer research department at the Weizmann Institute . In 1954 he was at the Hebrew University in Aharon Katzir with the work Free Energy of Polyelectrolyte Solutions doctorate . As a post-doctoral student he was at Cornell University with Peter Debye and in Leiden with Jan Josef Hermans . From 1958 to 1961 he was visiting professor at Technion and 1959/60 with Paul M. Doty at Harvard, at Convair Laboratories in San Diego with I. Oppenheim and at the University of Oregon with TL Hill. From 1961 he was a professor of chemical physics at the Weizmann Institute. In 1979 he retired, but was still scientifically active. From 1963 to 1967 he was scientific director of the Weizmann Institute, from 1972 to 1978 dean of the chemistry faculty and from 1963 to 1979 head of the chemical physics department.

1974/75 he was rector of the Open University of Israel and was its honorary fellow.

He dealt with polymer research, statistical thermodynamics (especially of polymers, phase transitions in biopolymers), inter- and intramolecular forces, theoretical molecular biology and questions about the origin of life.

In 1958 he received the Weizmann Prize, in 1969 the Israel Prize and in 1997 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Hebrew University.
