Future needs memory (formerly Shoa.de ) is the internet portal of the working group Future needs memory, which deals scientifically and didactically with the topics of National Socialism , anti-Semitism and the Holocaust and their aftermath up to the present day.

The Hebrew term Shoah means, for example, great catastrophe or downfall, specifically the preparation and execution of the systematic genocide of around two thirds of the Jewish population of European origin during the Nazi regime.

In November 2014, the portal renamed itself in Future Needs Remembrance and since then has also contained articles on coming to terms with the Soviet Zone and the GDR past, the Middle East conflict and left and right-wing extremism in the Federal Republic.

According to its own statements, the association was founded in 1996 and was the result of an initiative by historians , journalists and computer scientists . The aim was to use the possibilities of the then still new medium Internet . The project sees itself as a platform that invites non-academic history buffs to participate and to deal with the past. In 2005 the portal was one of the nominees for the Grimme Online Award . In 2006 Shoa.de was recognized as an exemplary project by the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance .

The association members and authors work on the project on a voluntary basis and from different locations. Among the over 190 authors according to the list of employees are history students, university professors, but also Holocaust survivors. In addition to the editorial part, there is also a link catalog to historical text sources on the site.

The project is supported with materials from the German Historical Museum , the House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany , the Federal Agency for Civic Education and the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial .

The association does not receive any financial support from the public and finances its expenses through donations.
