Shobhana Samarth

Shobhana Samarth (also Shobana or Shobhna ; Marathi / Hindi : शोभना समर्थ, Śobhanā Samarth; born November 17, 1916 in Bombay ; † February 9, 2000 in Pune , Maharashtra ) was an Indian actress of Hindi films .

Life

Shobhana Samarth came into contact with the film through her mother, the actress Rattan Bai . She made her debut at Kolhapur Cinetone in 1935 in a film by Master Vinayak that was shot in a Marathi and a Hindi version. From 1936 to 1941 she worked for the Sagar Film Company in Bombay and appeared frequently with the actor Motilal . In her first film, directed by Vijay Bhatt , Bharat Milap (1942), she established her screen image as a Sita actress. She took on this role several times at the side of Prem Adib as Ram , including in the mythological films Ramrajya (1943) and Rambaan (1947). Their representations shaped today's iconographic images of the Ramayana couple in calendar pictures , comics, on television, but also on agitational posters of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (see Babri Mosque and Rama Janmabhoomi Temple ). Shobhana Samarth also appeared in other roles in mythological films and melodramas, which, however, lag behind their Sita representations in the public perception. In 1950 and 1960 she directed two of her own films, Hamari Beti and Chhabili .

Shobhana Samarth was married to director and cameraman Kumar Sen Samarth. Of their four children, Nutan and Tanuja also became actresses. The "family job" is also carried out by her granddaughters Kajol and Tanisha .

Shobhana Samarth died of cancer.
