Shohreh Bayat (2016)

Shohreh Bayat (born March 14, 1987 in Rasht ) is an Iranian chess referee and chess player . In 2006 she became FIDE Women's Champion and has been an International Chess Referee since 2014; she is also the general secretary of the Iranian Chess Federation.

Life

Bayat acts as a chess referee. She was the deputy main referee for important chess competitions , for example the 2017 Junior World Championships in Tarvisio , the 2018 Women's World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk and the 2019 Women's Candidates Tournament in Kazan . She served as a referee at three women's chess Olympiads (2014, 2016, 2018).

In January 2020, Bayat was the main referee at the 2020 Women's World Chess Championship between Ju Wenjun and Alexandra Goryachkina in Shanghai and Vladivostok . This led to a scandal that attracted worldwide attention when Bayat was attacked by Iranian media loyal to the government for having her hair too loose or wearing her headgear too loose. In response to this, Bayat wore her hair completely loose the next day because, according to her, she “now has nothing to lose”. After the President of the Iranian Chess Federation could not guarantee her safety, she decided not to return to Iran because she feared severe sanctions against her person. She said: " Not wearing the hijab is a crime in Iran." Bayat feared that "her passport might be invalidated, arrested and put in jail."

Bayat has been in Great Britain since February 2020 and has applied for asylum there .
