history

A soap factory was located on the property during the Portuguese colonial times . The construction contract was awarded to the Portuguese consortium Soares da Costa / Griner in December 2011 . The planned construction time was 18 months. Completion dragged on and on, however, in April 2018 the construction work was 96% complete, and it was not finally finished until the second half of 2019 with the opening of the three ZAP cinema halls . During the construction phase, the owner announced that he was in negotiations with the major international brands Hard Rock Café , Prada , Max Mara , Michael Kors , Giorgio Armani and others. However, none of them had settled there by the beginning of 2020.

controversy

The owner of the shopping center, Grupo Sopros , is associated with the holding company Suninvest and the project development company Sodimo . Sodimo consists of only two shareholders, the Banco Angolano de Investimentos (BAI) and the oil company Sonangol . According to research by the investigative journalist Rafael Marques de Morais , Suninvest is the investment instrument of the private José Eduardo dos Santos Foundation. The foundation was filled by more or less forced donations from mostly foreign companies and was considered the "bribe fund" of the former Angolan president. Soares da Costa construction company is one of the foundation's main donors and one of the companies that have benefited most from government contracts.
