concept

The Hard Rock Cafes are not primarily known for their food, but primarily for their atmosphere. With over 70,000 exhibits, the chain has the largest collection of music exhibits in the world. All exhibits are bought at auctions or provided directly by musicians . Signed guitars , stage clothing, rare photos or gold records are used as wall decorations in the cafes.

The individual Hard Rock Cafes have stalls or shops selling clothes and souvenirs. Many visitors collect pins, which the chain regularly issues in limited editions. Also for the sold there T-shirts with the Hard Rock Cafe logo and the name of the city, glasses, teddy bears, drumsticks , Zippo Lighters and dolls exists a lively buying and collecting interest. The Hard Rock Cafe logo was designed by Alan Aldridge .

history

The first Hard Rock Cafe was opened on June 14, 1971 on Old Park Lane in London , on the premises of a former Rolls-Royce agency, by the two Americans Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton .

Eric Clapton , who preferred a permanent seat, was one of their regulars . To secure this, he had an electric guitar, a red Fender Lead II built from 1979, hanging on the wall there. It is now in the "safe" of the HRC London and can be viewed there. A few weeks later, Pete Townshend (member of The Who ) sent a black Gibson Les Paul to the cafe, and so the collection expanded.

In 1982 Tigrett and Morton started opening new cafes around the world. The first Hard Rock Cafes were founded by Morton in Los Angeles , San Francisco , Chicago and Houston . Tigrett opened branches in New York City , Dallas , Boston , Washington , Orlando , Paris and Berlin . Tigrett eventually sold his shares in "Mecca Leisure". “Mecca”, in turn, was bought in 1990 by “ The Rank Organization ”. "Rank" went on to open more branches and eventually acquired the cafes that Morton had founded, as well as the Canadian chain now founded by Nick Bitove .

Today there are not only Hard Rock Cafes but also hotels , bars , casinos , an event hall and an exhibition of exhibits not in cafes. This is located in an old bank building and was therefore given the name "Vault" (English for safe). The Orlando Vault, which is shaped like an upside-down pyramid, has been closed after a year. In April 2008, the theme park opened Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach ( South Carolina ), which was closed after one season.

Hard Rock Cafe International Inc. was part of "The Rank Group Plc" with headquarters in London from 1990 to the end of 2006 and operates its cafes both under its own management (primarily in the USA and Europe) and under the franchise system (especially in Asia ). In December 2006, the sale of Hard Rock International to the Seminole Tribe of Florida for $ 965 million, with which some of the Hard Rock casinos and Hard Rock hotels have already operated together, was announced. Exceptions are the Hard Rock Casino in London (whose name has been changed to G Casino Piccadilly ) and the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas . Hamish Dodds has been the company's CEO since 2004 . Since it was sold to the Indian tribe, the company has flourished despite the economic crisis.

Trivia

  • Page 1 of the Doors album Morrison Hotel from 1970 is entitled Hard Rock Cafe . On the back of the album there is a café with that name.
  • In 1977 Carole King wrote the song Hard Rock Café . In her autobiography, A Natural Woman , she reports that she was inspired by a bar in downtown Los Angeles and a small restaurant in Idaho with the same name. At that time, she was not aware of the identity of the name with the restaurant chain. Allegedly, the HRC founders Morton and Tigrett were also inspired to give the name to the same bar in Los Angeles. Olivia Molina sang the German version of the piece.
  • In Heidelberg there was a café until February 2017, which was called Hard Rock Café , but did not belong to the group; after a series of legal proceedings, the restaurant had to change its name. In the meantime, only the sale of souvenirs had to be stopped.
