Pigeon Forge is a city with the status " City " in Sevier County in the US state of Tennessee with 6036 inhabitants (2013).

Pigeon Forge is located in the Great Smoky Mountains , also known colloquially as the Smokies . With many entertainment options, the place has become a popular tourist attraction and therefore calls itself The Center of Fun In The Smokies . Immediately to the north is Sevierville , the administrative center of the county. The cities of Knoxville and Nashville are 40 and 300 kilometers to the northwest, respectively. The US Highway 321 runs through the town.
history
After the area was used as a hunting area by the Cheroke Indians for several hundred years , the first settlers settled in the area in 1788. The name Pigeon Forge was formed of two parts: After a located there blacksmith shop (English: forge ) and because of the very frequent in the area at that time passenger pigeon ( Ectopistes migratorius ) (English: passenger pigeon ). This pigeon species is now completely extinct. The main livelihoods of the inhabitants were initially small agricultural and handicraft businesses. From the 1960s onwards, several amusement businesses were founded in the village and Pigeon Forge was expanded into a tourist center, which in 2015 counted over ten million visitors.
