The alpine bell-like winter leaf or fringed winter leaf ( Shortia soldanelloides ) is a species of the genus Shortia in the Diapensiaceae family .
features
The alpine bell-like winter leaf is an evergreen, perennial, herbaceous plant . The leaf blade is 0.6 to 12 inches long and wide, oval or circular and often heart-shaped at the base. The inflorescence is terminal and 2- to 12-flowered. The corolla lobes are slashed and colored pink or white. The sterile stamens are linear.
The flowering period extends from March to April.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 12.
Occurrence
The alpine bell-like winter leaf occurs in Japan in southern Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in dry, stony places at altitudes of 200 to 2000 meters.
Taxonomy
A synonym for Shortia soldanelloides (Siebold & Zucc.) Makino is Schizocodon soldanelloides Siebold & Zucc.
use
The alpine bell-like winter leaf is rarely used as an ornamental plant for alpine houses. The species has been in culture since 1982 at the latest.
