Shotwell is a free photo management - and image editing - software for Linux . It is part of the Gnome 3 desktop environment and the standard image management of the Linux distributions Ubuntu (from version 10.10) and Fedora (up to version 27).

Shotwell is being developed as part of the Gnome project. The main developer is Jim Nelson. The first release was Shotwell version 0.1.0 in 2009 under the umbrella of the Yorba Foundation, but which had ceased operations in early 2015. A spin-off from Shotwell has also been under development as part of the Elementary OS project since 2014 . The spin-off is known as "Pantheon Photos". If necessary, improvements should be incorporated into the original program.

Range of functions

Shotwell offers tools for importing, managing, editing and exporting images. SQLite is used as the database basis . All changes to images are lossless; they are saved in a separate directory that can be specified manually. The original file can be restored at any time, but not intermediate steps, since there is no processing history.

The file formats JPEG , TIFF , PNG and BMP as well as all raw formats that are also supported by the Libraw program library are read .

The import is possible from external storage media, from a connected digital camera or from photo collections managed with F-Spot . When importing from a digital camera, Shotwell uses the gPhoto program library .

After images have been imported, they are sorted in a tree structure according to date, month and day. It is also possible to sort the images according to keywords and ratings. Exif data , IPTC metadata and XMP information of the images can be displayed and edited to a limited extent by Shotwell (the following can be modified: title, keywords, date, time, rating). Shotwell cannot process GPS information.

A small selection of tools is available for image processing. This includes an auto correction, a flash eye correction, tools for changing the tone value and a rotation and crop function.

The files can be exported to Facebook , Flickr , Picasa and YouTube , for example . Corresponding plugins may have to be installed for this. There are also other plugins with which the functionality of Shotwell can be expanded.

Shotwell also supports importing videos in Ogg Theora , QuickTime , MPEG-4 and AVI formats by integrating the Gstreamer multimedia framework .

criticism

In a test of four photo administrations for Linux in Linux-Magazin 09/13 the conclusion was that Shotwell is slimmer and clearer compared to Corel AfterShot Pro , Darktable and Digikam , but this is at the expense of functionality. Shotwell is therefore of no interest to experts.
In the summary of the Ubuntu book by Markus Fischer on Ubuntu 12.04, it says that the software simply manages without nested menu navigation and that Shotwell is based on Apple's iPhoto in design and ergonomics .
