Siard from Mariengaarde

Saint Siard von Mariengaarde (* mid- 12th century in Friesland ; † November 13th or, according to some secondary sources, November 17th, 1230 in Mariengaarde ) is one of the better-known saints of the Premonstratensian Order . He was the fifth abbot of the great Mariengaarde monastery .

Life

St. Siard was born into a wealthy family in Friesland around the middle of the 12th century . Its Frisian name means the bold winner in German . He attended school in pen Mariëngaarde (German Mariengarten ), which was from 1163 to 1576 and was in Hallum, a place that today the West Frisian municipality Ferwerderadiel counts. The founding abbot , St. Friedrich von Hallum , finally accepted him into the monastery. In 1194 Siard became his successor and thus the fifth abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery in Friesland. He refused special treatment, lived humbly first among equals, and cared especially for the poor. He also took part in the work of the community, especially in the construction of dikes .

cult

His worship began soon after his death. After the destruction of Mariengaarde during the Reformation , its relics were transferred to Tongerloo in Flanders in 1617 , important relics are also in the Windberg Abbey . His cult was promoted by Pope Benedict XIII. confirmed in 1728. Mostly the holy Siard is depicted as a Premonstratensian abbot with a scourge and rod, with a shovel, a cross and / or sheaves of grain as well as distributing bread to the poor. There are pictorial representations of him z. B. in Bad Schussenried , Steingaden and in Geras Abbey in Lower Austria .

His feast day is either on November 13th or 17th, depending on the region; in the order it is celebrated today on November 14th.
