The Siberian marmot ( Marmota sibirica ) is a species of the squirrel family . It occurs in Southwest Siberia , Tuva , Transbaikalia , North and West Mongolia , as well as Heilongjiang and Inner Mongolia . In the Mongolian Altai Mountains , where its distribution area borders on that of the gray marmot and both species occur partly sympatric , it inhabits fertile high valleys, while the gray marmots apparently only inhabit the tops of the mountain ridges. The species was classified as not endangered by the IUCN in 1996.

There are two subspecies:

  • M. s. sibirica
  • M. s. caliginosus

It is believed that, together with the Mongolian pika ( Ochotona pallasi ), it is the carrier of a local form of the plague known as "marmot plague".
