Sibylla Elisabeth von Württemberg (born April 10, 1584 in Mömpelgard , † January 20, 1606 in Dresden ) was a princess of Württemberg and by marriage Duchess of Saxony .

Life

Sibylla Elisabeth was the eldest daughter of Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg (1557–1608) from his marriage to Sibylla (1564–1614), daughter of Prince Joachim Ernst of Anhalt .

Sibylla Elisabeth's father sought to establish a connection with the Electoral Saxon house. He was looking for allies among the Protestant princes of the German Empire who would support him in his quest for independence from the Habsburg imperial family. Initially, a connection with Johann Georg's older brother Christian was planned, but in 1602 he married a Danish princess . A simultaneous marriage project between her brother Johann Friedrich and Johann Georg's sister Sophie was not pursued by the Saxon side. Sibylla Elisabeth married the future Elector Johann Georg I of Saxony (1585–1656) in Dresden on September 16, 1604 .

The castle, town and office of Weißensee were designated as Wittum for them . The couple was granted their own court , which was mainly financed with the income from the Merseburg Monastery. Sibylla Elisabeth distributed medicines free of charge to the needy and was described as a “real mother of the country” , but suddenly died at the age of 21 when her first child was stillborn and was buried in Freiberg Cathedral .
