Sibylle Hagmann

Sibylle Hagmann (born 1965 in Switzerland ) is a Swiss type designer .

Live and act

Sibylle Hagmann studied at the Basel School of Design until 1989 , after which she worked at Eclat and Zintzmeyer & Lux in Zurich . A master’s degree at CalArts in California followed by 1996 . For several years she was responsible for the design of printed matter, websites and publications for the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California and taught at various schools in California. In 2000, she moved to Houston, where she founded the Kontour design office , which works for clients such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston , the Dallas Museum of Art and the University of Southern California and the Rice University School of Architecture. She has been a professor in the Graphic Communications Program at the University of Houston since 2002 .

Works

  • In 1999 Hagmann published the Cholla font family , which was marketed by Emigre and received an ATypI award.
  • Hagmann wrote the essay Non-existent Design: Women and the Creation of Type , in which she examines why women are underrepresented in font design and, in addition to explanatory approaches, also provides statistics. The article was published in June 2005 in the magazine Visual Communication .
  • In 2014 she gave a speech at the TYPO San Francisco conference, organized by FontShop , on her study of how font design in the GDR developed after World War II compared to the advances in typography in West Germany.
