The Sichuan wood mouse ( Apodemus latronum ) is a species of mammal belonging to the genus of wood mice ( Apodemus ) within rodents (Rodentia). It is distributed in the south of the People's Republic of China to Myanmar and northern India .
features
The Sichuan wood mouse reaches a head-trunk length of 9.2 to 10.7 centimeters and a tail length of 10.0 to 12.0 centimeters. The rear foot length is 25 to 27 millimeters and the ear length is 18 to 21 millimeters. The back fur is dark brown and becomes lighter reddish-brown on the flanks. The belly side is gray-white, the color against the back fur is only indistinctly differentiated. The length of the tail corresponds approximately to the rest of the body, it is dark brown on top and lighter on the underside. The ears are black-brown and noticeably darker than the head and shoulders. The females have three pairs of teats .
The skull has a length of 28 to 30 millimeters. It has very well defined bulges above the eyes , which, however, only slightly extend over the parietal bones . The species is very similar to the South Chinese wood mouse ( Apodemus draco ) and differs from it mainly in its slightly larger size, longer ears and hind feet and darker fur and the smaller number of teats in the females.
distribution
The Sichuan wood mouse is distributed in the south of the People's Republic of China to Myanmar and northern India . In China it occurs in the east of Xizang , the north of Yunnan , in Sichuan and the east of Qinghai . In India the current occurrence is unclear, historically it occurred in Arunachal Pradesh . There is also no information about the southern limit of distribution in Myanmar.
Way of life
The Sichuan wood mouse lives mainly in valley pastures and mountain forest areas at altitudes of 2700 to about 4000 meters.
Systematics
The Sichuan wood mouse is classified as an independent species within the wood mice (genus Apodemus ), which consists of 20 species and is distributed over large parts of Europe and Asia. The first scientific description was made by Oldfield Thomas in 1911, who described the species using individuals from the Kuatun region in the northwest of the Chinese province of Sichuan. It is considered by some authors to be a subspecies of the South China wood mouse ( Apodemus draco ).
Hazard and protection
The species is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as not endangered (least concern). This is justified by the large populations and the frequent and regular occurrence in the distribution area as well as the absence of any risks to the species.
