The film Seven Years in Tibet from 1956 is a documentary based on the autobiographical book of the same name by Heinrich Harrer .

action

Seven Years in Tibet tells the story of the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer, who escaped from a British internment camp in India across the Himalayas to Tibet at the beginning of the Second World War . There he met the young 14th Dalai Lama and a friendly relationship developed between the two. A few years later, however, Harrer had to flee again when the Chinese People's Liberation Army marched into Tibet due to the Tibetan-Chinese conflict .

background

The content of the film refers to the description of Heinrich Harrer's experiences in his 1952 book “Seven Years in Tibet”. In it, Harrer describes his time with Peter Aufschnaiter in Tibet and his acquaintance with the 14th Dalai Lama. The film partly uses 16mm color film material from Heinrich Harrer, which he shot in Tibet between 1939 and 1940. Some scenes in the film were also recreated by Heinrich Harrer himself.

Reviews and awards

Lexicon of International Films : '"The simple commentary and the mixing of Harrer's original recordings with studio scenes and material shot much later by the Englishman Sir Basil Gould reduce the information content of the film considerably."

The film was in competition at the 9th Cannes International Film Festival in 1956 .
