Seven wonders of Russia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Seven Wonders of Russia were announced in Moscow's Red Square on June 12, 2008, on Russia Day , the Russian national holiday .

The list was the result of an action that was launched in autumn 2007 after no Russian attractions were included in the list of the new seven wonders of the world . Russian mass media called on the population to take part in the action on the Internet or via SMS; over 25 million people are said to have participated. In three rounds, 49 candidates were selected (one for each Federal District of Russia), then 14 finalists, and finally the final winners. The aim of the campaign was to make Russia's hidden treasures known beyond the usual tourist destinations.
