The Siegel-Schwall Band is an American blues-rock band that was founded in 1964 in Chicago by music students Corky Siegel and Jim Schwall .

Band history

In 1964 the two music students Corky Siegel (harmonica, piano) and Jim Schwall (guitar, mandolin) performed as a blues duo. After adding a drummer (first Russ Chadwick, later Shelly Plotkin, most recently Sam Lay) and a bassist (first Jos Davidson, then Jack Dawson, later Rollo Radford), they finally called themselves "Siegel-Schwall Band". They played in Chicago clubs like “Pepper's Lounge” and “Big John's”, where they performed with blues greats like Willie Dixon , Little Walter , Muddy Waters and Howlin 'Wolf .

In 1965 they got a record deal with Vanguard Records through Sam Charters , where they released four albums between 1966 and 1970. Although they didn't achieve the popularity of other blues rock groups like the Butterfield Blues Band , they did play in big houses like the Fillmore West .

The Siegel-Schwall Band was the first blues band to perform with a symphony orchestra. In 1968 they performed Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (composer: William Russo ; conductor: Seiji Ozawa ). The recording, released by Deutsche Grammophon in 1973 , was made in 1972 with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra .

From 1971 the Siegel-Schwall Band released five albums on the Chicago record label "Wooden Nickel". The 1971 album The Siegel-Schwall Band won a 1973 Grammy for Best Record Cover . In 1974 the group disbanded.

Since 1987 the band has given occasional concerts again. With Alligator Records they released two new albums (1988 and 2005), alongside a number of compilations. 2005's Flash Forward peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart. Siegel and Schwall both have their own groups in addition to the Siegel-Schwall Band, with whom they also perform.
