Siegfried Hess (born March 20, 1940 in Hof (Saale) ) is a German physicist. Until 2007 he taught and researched as a professor at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Technical University of Berlin.

Life

Siegfried Hess studied mathematics and physics at the Friedrich Alexander University . In 1960 he became active in the Corps Bavaria Erlangen . In 1964 he received a diploma in physics. He was a graduate student in Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA. In 1967 he obtained his doctorate in Erlangen. rer. nat with a dissertation on the basics of the kinetic theory of polyatomic gases, supervised by Ludwig Waldmann . Hess was a postdoctoral fellow at the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory at the University of Leiden . He became professor for theoretical physics in Erlangen and in 1984, at the Technical University of Berlin . He worked as a visiting scientist and visiting professor at the Physics Department of the University of Toronto at the Huygens Laboratory of the University of Leiden in Holland, at the National Bureau of Standards in Boulder (Colorado, USA), at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, at the Research School of Chemistry of the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra and at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics of the University of California, Santa Barbara , USA.

His scientific field of work is the statistical physics of material properties and non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter, e.g. B. in gases, liquids, liquid crystals, colloidal dispersions, ferrous fluids and polymeric liquids. He also studied elastic properties and the plastic flow of solids. He worked on the theoretical principles, on the derivation of the relevant equations and their solution using analytical and numerical calculations, as well as on the comparison with the results of computer simulations and experiments. He wrote an introduction to mechanics and quantum mechanics for children and interested laypeople. He is a member of the Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti in Messina, Sicily.
