Siegfried Jaeckel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Siegfried H. Jaeckel , complete Siegfried Heinrich Ferdinand Jaeckel (born October 19, 1892 in Grünberg , † April 1, 1970 in Berlin ) was a German biologist and dentist who is best known for his research in the field of malacoology .

Life

After graduating from the humanistic grammar school in Neisse in 1912 , he began studying dentistry at the University of Berlin . He initially had to interrupt his studies due to the war, but graduated in 1919 with the state examination in dentistry. That same year he received his doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine's University with a thesis on the statistics and case report of malignant tumors pine for Dr. med. dent.

After completing this degree, Jaeckel practiced as a dentist in Berlin. In 1934 he became head of the school dental clinic in Berlin-Charlottenburg.

During this professional activity, Jaeckel, following a scientific inclination that had existed since his youth, took up a second degree at the University of Berlin - now in biology. He completed this in 1924 with a doctorate to become Dr. phil. after he had done a thesis on the mollusc fauna of the Sperenberg salt waters at the University's Zoological Institute .

From 1925 he worked - initially on a voluntary basis - as a biologist in the mollusc department of the Natural History Museum at Berlin University and invested a large part of his free time in malacoological research. During the Second World War he temporarily represented the head of the department.

On December 15, 1945, Jaeckel's “lifelong dream” came true: he was appointed curator and department head at the Museum of Natural History. In 1955 he was appointed professor at what was now the Humboldt University in Berlin.

During his time at the University of Berlin, Jaeckel dedicated himself "with unending diligence" to rebuilding the collections in his department, which had been badly damaged by the war. During this time he also founded the working group of Berlin malacologists and promoted the publication of the reports of the Berlin malacologists .

His work at the Natural History Museum ended abruptly with the construction of the Berlin Wall , as he lived in Dahlem in the western part of the city. One of his students, Rudolf Kilias, was appointed as his successor.

In 1967 the German Malacoological Society appointed Jaeckel as an honorary member. He had been a member of this specialist society since 1918.
