Siegfried Junghans (inventor)

Siegfried Junghans (born July 3, 1887 in Schramberg in the Black Forest, † September 5, 1954 in Schorndorf , Württemberg) was an inventor .

Life

The son of the watch manufacturer Arthur Junghans joined the Imperial Navy on April 1, 1906 . After training as a naval officer from 1906 to 1909, he served as an active naval officer until 1914. During the First World War he was in command of torpedo boats and most recently head of the Schnellboot Division in Flanders .

After his military career, he studied metallurgy and analytical chemistry in Stuttgart.

From 1919 to 1936 he was the technical and commercial director of the Messingwerke Schwarzwald AG. He was also a member of the board of directors of Gebr. Junghans AG in Schramberg from 1927 to 1931. He had the overall management of the Schwarzwälder Metallhandel AG (1923-1936) and a technical managerial position. He patented a non-harmonic mold oscillation and built the first continuous casting factory in Germany in 1933 . After the continuous casting of non-ferrous metals became common practice, he concentrated on the casting of steel and built a hot- blast cupola furnace for it . The Second World War ended the collaboration with Irving Rossi , resulting in two independent continuous casting developments. After he took up continuous steel casting again in Schorndorf in 1949, Mannesmann also recognized its importance.

Honors

  • In 1951 he and his brother Helmut received the title of Dr.-Ing. From the Technical University in Stuttgart. hc awarded.
  • 1952: Cross of Merit (Steckkreuz) of the Federal Republic of Germany.
