Siegmund Gabriel
Siegmund Gabriel (born November 7, 1851 in Berlin , † March 22, 1924 in Berlin) was a German chemist .
life and work
Siegmund Gabriel studied chemistry and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1874 with Robert Wilhelm Bunsen . He was a professor at Berlin University until 1921, where he researched the chemistry of numerous organic nitrogen compounds. So he discovered u. a. the ring closure of 2-bromoethylamine to ethyleneimine , synthesized pyrimidine for the first time , and in 1887 developed the Gabriel synthesis, named after him, of primary alkyl amines from haloalkanes. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . The Gabriel-Colman rearrangement , discovered in 1900, and the Robinson-Gabriel synthesis are named after him .
