Siegmund Helms

Siegmund Helms (born December 14, 1938 in Nordhorn ) is a German musicologist and music teacher .

Life

From 1958 Helms studied school music (including philosophy , psychology , pedagogy ) and geography and musicology (including ethnomusicology) in Hanover , Marburg and Berlin . 1967 doctorate he attended the Free University of Berlin Dr. phil. with a dissertation on the formation of melodies in the songs of J. Brahms and their relationship to folk songs and folk tunes . He passed the first and second state exams in Berlin in 1964 and in Kassel in 1968. Then he worked in school in Göttingen.

From 1971 to 1974 Helms was a lecturer in music education at the University of Education in Bayreuth and from 1974 to 1977 professor for music education at the Frankfurt University of Music . He then took on a professorship for music education at the Cologne University of Music until 2002 , where he was, among other things, head of the Institute for School Music and Deputy Director of the Rhineland University of Music (name of the Cologne University of Music from 1972 to 1987) and later also as dean of the Department of Music Education / Musicology was used.

Helms was chairman of several German music education associations and member of international committees. In addition, he was active as a journalist in a variety of ways. He has been married to Marianne Helms, who holds a doctorate in musicology, born in 1966 . Henze.
