Nicolaas "Niklaas" Pieter Johannes Janse van Rensburg (born August 30, 1864 in Palmietfontein near Potchefstroom , South African Republic ; † March 11, 1926 in Rietkuil near Ottosdal ), known as Siener van Rensburg , was a man who was a prophet among the Boers was true.

Life

Janse van Rensburg was born as the son of Willem Jacobus and Anna Catharina Janse van Rensburg on the Palmietfontein farm. He received formal education for only 20 days and mostly worked as a shepherd boy. All his life he could not write, but he could read - he only read the Bible . He had his first vision when he was seven when he predicted that a passing Koranna would not raid the farm. At about 17 he moved to Wolmaransstad , at 21 he was elected as church elder in the local parish of the Hervormde Kerk . In 1884 he married Anna Sophia Kruger, with whom he had ten children.

In the Second Boer War he came forward through accurate prophecies for the Boer general Koos de la Rey , who made him his close advisor. Van Rensburg also repeatedly protected the President of the Orange Free State , Marthinus Theunis Steyn, with his predictions . On September 13, 1901, van Rensburg foresaw a surprise attack on General Roux's camp ; van Rensburg fled, while Roux ignored the warning and was taken prisoner. In the battle of Tweebosch , van Rensburg is said to have foreseen the tactics of the opposing troops, so that de la Rey could defeat the British troops and take their general Paul Methuen prisoner.

In 1914 he saw the success of the Boer Rebellion , later known as the Maritz Rebellion . However, the rebellion failed. In 1915 he was arrested as a participant and sentenced to prison. After serving them, he returned to the Rietkuil Farm near Ottosdal in the Wolmaransstad district about a year later .

According to his information, his prophecies reached him at night and consisted of a series of symbols that van Rensburg put together for an interpretation. Max du Preez reports that two months before de la Rey's surprising death, van Rensburg claims to have seen a paper with the numbers “1” and “5” about Lichtenburg , many de la Rey without headgear and several trains going to Lichtenburg Flowers and food that have not been touched. The prediction became known, but not understood despite van Rensburg's warning. De la Rey died soon after on a 15th from a police shot, his headgear had rolled off and several trains drove to Lichtenburg for his funeral. Occasionally van Rensburg is said to have not been able to interpret the symbols he "saw".

reception

The prophecies were recorded in the last years of van Rensburg's life by both the pastor Servaas Rossouw and Anna Badenhorst, a daughter of van Rensburg. With the outbreak of the Second World War, in which many Boers refused to participate on the side of the Allies, these works were banned.

Up to the present day, Van Rensburg's prophecies are related to current political events, especially by right-wing Afrikaaner circles , including the Suidlanders group . Van Rensburg's prophecy of a “night of long knives” in the event of the death of the first black head of state is occasionally quoted to stir up fear of massacres among whites. In 2003, several Afrikaans of the Boeremag group accused of plot plans claimed that they were inspired by van Rensburg's prophecies.
