Sigmund Barth , (born August 18, 1723 in Bern , † August 18 , 1772 in Basel ) was a Swiss painter who worked primarily as a portraitist for the patriciate of Bern and Basel.

Career

After briefly studying with Johann Rudolf Huber , Sigmund Barth started his apprenticeship with Johann Rudolf Dälliker (* 1694 in Berlin , † 1769 in Schaffhausen ). In 1746 Barth followed Dälliker to Zurich. However, he returned to Bern in the 1740s, where he lived in simple circumstances. Barth's family originally came from Basel, where Barth still had relatives. Through this agency, Barth received the first portrait commissions from the Basel patriciate in 1766. Barth was now 43 years old. Due to the considerable success and encouraged by the relatives, Barth moved to Basel. In Basel, Barth renewed his citizenship and was elected sixth in the Guild of Heaven on August 19, 1769  . Thus, Barth also gained a certain reputation and came to modest prosperity.

In his later years, Barth was particularly popular as a portraitist for children.

Sigmund Barth remained unmarried throughout his life. He died of a stroke at 1:30 p.m. on his 49th birthday while he was working on a portrait.
