Sigmund Geiges (born November 10, 1810 in Freiburg im Breisgau ; † February 9, 1898 ibid) was a German architect and city ​​architect for the city of Freiburg im Breisgau.

Life

Sigmund Geiges was born as the only son of Franz Anton Geiges (1777-1860) and his wife Josepha. Zipfel (1785-1859) born. Franz Anton Geiges was the district auditor for the entire Upper Rhine District from 1819 to 1842, based in Freiburg. The grandfather Joseph Geiges (1731–1797) came from Raithaslach near Stockach on Lake Constance , emigrated to Freiburg in 1760, was released from Habsburg serfdom in 1761 ( city ​​air makes you free !), Was able to buy into the guild of linen weavers and finally became a guild master in 1786 . Thekla, one of Sigmund Geiges' two sisters, was married to the Freiburg sculptor Alois Knittel . He was married a total of three times, his second marriage to Elisabeth Stein had his son Oskar (1849–1923, architect), and his third marriage to Theresa Baumann was his son Fritz (1853–1935, glass painter and restorer).

Career

Sigmund Geiges studied at the universities in Freiburg and Karlsruhe. After practical work experience and educational trips throughout Europe, Sigmund Geiges worked as a teacher, first at the trade school for building craftsmen in Baden-Baden , then in Triberg and at the grand ducal high school in Offenburg .

In 1856 he got a job as an architect at the Freiburg building authority. After the death of city architect Jakob Straub , Sigmund Geiges was his successor with responsibility for urban development. This was faced with special tasks due to the rapid increase in Freiburg's population after the establishment of the Empire in 1871 (1871: 24,000 inhabitants, 1885: 40,000 inhabitants).

In 1885 Sigmund Geiges retired at the age of 75. He died in his hometown in 1898 and was buried in the family grave in the main cemetery.
