Sigrid Gurie (born May 18, 1911 in New York City , New York , as Sigrid Gurie Haukelid , † August 14, 1969 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was a Norwegian - American actress.

life and career

Sigrid Gurie Haukelid was born in Brooklyn as the daughter of Bjørulf Knutson Haukelid (1878-1944) and Sigrid Johanne Christophersen (1877-1969). Her twin brother Knut Haukelid (1911-1994) later became an important resistance fighter in Norway against National Socialism . The father worked as a mechanic on the New York subway. In 1914 the family moved back to their original homeland, Norway. Later Gurie also lived in Sweden and Belgium. It came to Hollywood in the mid-1930s . Eminent film producer Samuel Goldwyn discovered Gurie and planned to present her as the new Greta Garbo . In the press she was often advertised as "Siren of the Fjords" or "The Norwegian Garbo" - but supposedly only until the press found out that she was born in Brooklyn.

In 1937 she made her film debut in a small supporting role in the film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's The Way Back . The following year, Goldwyn used her alongside Gary Cooper and Basil Rathbone in the adventure film The Adventures of Marco Polo as the daughter of Kublai Khan . In addition to Charles Boyer and Hedy Lamarr , Sigrid Gurie could also be seen in 1938 in Walter Wanger's Algiers as Leading Lady . Gurie's career did not take off and the actress appeared in the following years exclusively in B-films , including 1940 Three Faces West at the side of John Wayne . There were still unsuccessful attempts to revive Gurie's film career in the 1940s, including portraying Magda Goebbels in the anti-Nazi film Enemy of Women . In 1950 she made her last film.

In 1935 Gurie married Thomas Stewart in California, but in 1938 she divorced. A year later she married Dr. Lawrence Spangard, but they divorced in 1948. A third marriage to Lynn Abbott between 1958 and 1961 also ended in divorce. Since the 1940s, Sigrid Gurie devoted himself more and more to painting and painted landscapes, portraits and abstract pictures. She also designed jewelry for Royal Copenhagen . She spent the last years of her life in San Miguel de Allende . She died of an embolism at the age of 58 .
