Sigurd Clausen Haanes (born August 1, 1913 in Oslo , † April 3, 1943 near Calverley , Leeds , United Kingdom ) was a Norwegian ski jumper .

Career

Haanes reached fourth place in ski jumping from the normal hill at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc in 1937 and narrowly missed the medal ranks. In 1940 he jumped a new hill record on the Holmenkollen with a jump of 66 meters. In doing so, he surpassed his compatriot Reidar Karlsen by only half a meter. In the same year he was drafted into the army and took part in the Norway campaign as part of a ski relay. After the campaign he traveled to Great Britain and trained as a pilot with the Royal Air Force . Haanes died on April 3, 1943 in an airplane accident near Calverley . Sigurd Haanes was the son of Thorgny Haanes and his wife Hedvig Kristine Clausen. He was also the brother of tennis player Johan Haanes .
