Sigurd Sigurdsson Markusfostre

Sigurd Sigurdsson Markusfostre (* 1155 at the latest, when his father was killed; † September 29, 1163 in Gravdal (in today's Bergen )) was a Norwegian antagonist. His parents were King Sigurd Munn (approx. 1132–1155).

He was king of the rebels who supported Håkon Herdebrei , but was captured and beheaded by the people around Erling Skakke .

Sigurd was raised by the nobleman Markus von Skog in Ringsaker in Hedmark . After Håkon Herdebrei was killed in 1162, the rest of his men, led by Jarl Sigurd Hallvardsson, found Markus von Skog, who was a friend of Jarl Sigurd. There they proclaimed Sigurd Markusfostre king, while Jarl Sigurd led the company.

In the autumn of 1162 and the following winter, King Sigurd and his entourage stayed in Viken and Opland . They had a large army to maintain and soon had supply problems. Erling Skakke sat in Tønsberg with a large team ready to attack. Heimskringla reports that the opportunity to do so came in February 1163. Fagrskinna, on the other hand, postponed these events to a year later. Then the two armies clashed northwest of Tønsberg in Re . In that battle, Jarl Sigurd fell, and the rest of the men fled into the woods. Markus and King Sigurd got a few ships in Vik and went east to Konghelle. Erling Skakke also went there. King Sigurd and his men sought refuge in the far south on Hisingen. There they were supported by the population, and Erling contented himself with taking the ships away from them. Without ships, they decided to go to Nidaros by land. There they were well received, and Sigurd was proclaimed king on the Øyrating. In the summer of 1163 they were very popular, received ships and sailed south from there. On September 29th they were surprised by part of Erling Skakke's army outside Bergen. Markus and Sigurd were captured. Sigurd was beheaded there, while Markus was hung in Kvarven, now a part of Bergen. The rest of the team broke up. After the Fagrskinna, it happened in 1164.

Sigurd was the son of a king, but Erling Skakke's son Magnus Erlingsson was not, but could only justify his royal status through his mother Kristin , who was a daughter of King Jórsalafari . Therefore, Erling had to kill Sigurd in order to eliminate serious competition for his son.

Sigurd could never exercise his royal office as he was barely 10 years old.

Remarks

  1. A fortress was built in Kvarven in 1899 to protect the entrance to Bergen. During the Second World War it was conquered by the Germans in the course of Operation Weser Exercise and then expanded and modernized.
